Cross-Journal Searching
-
SCIENCE Online lets you search across multiple journals.
After performing a search in SCIENCE Online, you can perform the
same search in other journals through the "pulldown menu" at the top of
the search result page entitled "Try this search in:..." Selecting a
journal title and clicking the "Search" button
will start a search using the previously specified
criteria in the selected journal.
Inter-Journal Links
-
So that you can quickly and easily move from articles to the
full text of cited references, we have created hyperlinks from reference
citations to the articles to which they refer.
When an article in SCIENCE Online cites an article from
another HighWire-based journal,
hyperlinks have been created which allow you to move from the original article to
the abstract of the cited article. Likewise, links have been created
to allow users of other HighWire-based
journals to quickly and easily access
SCIENCE Online articles.
[List of Participating Journals]
These Inter-Journal links take you to the abstract of the
cited reference. Limited free access may be granted to allow you
free use of the single article which was cited by the original article.
Searching Medline
-
As a service to subscribers, we are developing a custom Medline Search
Service. This service, will let you
search the citations and abstracts in the Medline/PubMed database as well as
material not present in conventional Medline databases, and will provide
advanced search and retrieval features specifically designed for the readers
of online biomedical journals.
The PubMed search system provides access to the PubMed database of bibliographic
information, which is drawn primarily from Medline and PreMedline. In addition,
for participating journals that are indexed selectively for Medline, PubMed
includes all articles from that journal, not just those that are included in
Medline. Finally, PubMed also provides access to the molecular biology databases
included in NCBI's Entrez retrieval system. It is expected that access to
additional National Library of Medicine databases will be added in the future.
Exporting Citations
- We provide a simple and direct method of acquiring article citations
in the Medlars format compatible with import into
personal bibliographic management software such as
EndNote,
Reference Manager, or
ProCite.
- To export citations with Abstracts for any SCIENCE Online article to a
citation manager program, the following steps are suggested:
- View the abstract or Full Text article of interest
- Click the [Download to Citation Manager]
link above the article title.
- When the tagged version of the citation is displayed,
scroll until the "Save" button can be seen.
- Select your preferred format (Macintosh, PC or Unix)
from the "Save" menu and click the
Save button.
- Select the directory
you wish to save the file in and give the file a unique name.
- Follow the
instructions that came with your citation manager to import the reference into
your personal bibliographic database
If your citation manager does not support import of Medlars format, you
may still use the Download function. After saving the citation to your
local disk, open the citation file and manually copy/paste the
information in the file into the appropriate fields in your personal
bibliographic database.
Viewing Figures
-
Thumbnail Images:
A "thumbnail" -- a small version -- of each figure or
equation appears in the text. In most cases, these thumbnails
are sufficient to permit you to decide if you want to see the larger
version(s).
Medium-Sized Images:
Clicking on a thumbnail opens a second window
in your browser that displays a larger version of a table or figure, as
well as the complete text of the figure's caption. You don't need
any additional software to view this medium-size image.
Large, High-Resolution Images:
To view a high-resolution version of a figure, click on the medium-sized image or
the link to "[View Larger Version of this Image]".
Browsers can be used to view high-resolution images, but
we recommend using a helper application instead.
Read about obtaining and configuring a graphics viewer
under the appropriate section:
Macintosh,
Windows, or
Unix.
